About this artwork
The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland commissioned this portrait as part of a series to celebrate the 60th anniversary of its School of Drama, from which Glasgow-born Bill Paterson graduated in 1969. He went on to be a founding member of John McGrath’s theatre company, 7:84. He made his debut on the London stage in 1976, and also appeared in the 1978 BAFTA award-winning TV drama, Licking Hitler. In 1982 he was nominated for an Olivier Award for his performance in Schweyk in the Second World War. The 1980s saw Paterson’s career expand into film, leading to performances in international blockbusters like the film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The Witches (1990), and British classics like Dad’s Army (2016). He has appeared in numerous TV series, including Fleabag and Outlander. In 2015, he won a lifetime achievement award for his Outstanding Contribution to Film & Television in the Scottish BAFTA awards.
