About this artwork

‘Work No. 1102’ is part of a series of paintings that Creed created with brushes of varying sizes that come in a set. Using each brush to make one line, each slightly shorter than the one before, a pyramid of steps is created. This incrementation plays with ideas of growth and progress. Creed has said: “I find that it’s difficult to choose, to decide that one thing’s more important than the other ... So what I try and do is to choose without having to make decisions”. With this in mind, paintings such as this which utilise the given size of the brushes in a set, Creed allows the physical qualities of the material to dictate its own painted form. This idea of stacking or staircases is visible in much of Creed’s work.
