Colin Montgomerie, b.1963. Golfer
About this artwork
Known affectionately as ‘Monty’, Colin Montgomerie has been consistently ranked among the world’s best golfers for more than two decades. He has won over forty tournament victories, the last being the 2007 Smurfit Kappa European Open. Recent achievements include captaining the victorious European team at the 2010 Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor, for which he was named BBC Sports Personality Coach of the Year. In 2010 Montgomerie asked the young Glasgow-based artist Iain Faulkner to paint portraits of the triumphant Ryder Cup team members, which were presented to them as gifts. This portrait draws on the existing relationship between sitter and artist. Faulkner shows Montgomerie standing on the Ailsa course at Turnberry. The sun setting in the west behind Ailsa Craig adds to the pensive mood.
