About this artwork

‘Wilshire, Grant’ 2001 is one of seven prints which juxtaposes street intersections from San Francisco and Los Angeles on top of one another. The title brings together part of an intersection name from each city; from Wilshire in Los Angeles and Grant Avenue in San Francisco, inventing a new street. Ruscha creates a network of pattern and text and contrasts the similarities and differences between the two Californian cities. Its abstract design is similar to the work of the American Minimalist painters Agnes Martin and Brice Marden. Ruscha has spent much of his career as an artist exploring the complex and changeable cartography of California as he does here.
