About this artwork

Carole Gibbons’ distinctive art practice has always been greatly admired by her fellow artists in Glasgow and beyond. In 1965 she staged her first solo exhibition in her Renfrew Street studio in Glasgow, where she sold this drawing directly to Douglas Hall, the first Keeper (curator) of the Modern. The ambiguity of this ‘bridal’ figure is emphasised by the white cross-hatched lines that dance across the entire surface of the paper. Gibbons’ work is enigmatic, inspired by mythological narratives and her own intimate world, always expressed in a poetic and flowing style.
