About this artwork

This rapid small pencil sketch comes from a sketchbook comprising forty-three leaves of landscape studies Paterson made in England and Scotland. Such quick drawings were made on the spot and used as the basis for more highly finished watercolours and paintings back in the artists’ studio. Paterson was best-known as a landscape painter, however, portraiture also constituted a significant part of Paterson’s output.
