Natalia Goncharova
'Communal Grave' from the portfolio 'Images of War'
About this artwork
Gonchorova’s Images of War creates an apocalyptic vision of war, which depicts Russia and its allies as a force for good against the satanic evil of the Central Powers which threaten them. Goncharova used a combination of motifs from Russian folklore and culture combined with images of the present day. The angel in this print who guards over the mass grave of Russian troops is based on Russian orthodox iconography.
