About this artwork

The 1914 series of lithographs, Images of War is a powerful and moving portfolio, creating an apocalyptic vision of war where Russia is the righteous champion, supported by angels against Satanic and evil forces. The Pale Horse is a reference to the appearance of death in the Book of Revelation, the fourth horseman of the apocalypse. Goncharova used this motif to create an apocalyptic vision of the war, where Russia was supported by angels and the forces of god against the darkness of the Central Powers.
