'Vision in the Clouds' from the portfolio 'Images of War'
About this artwork
Gonchorova’s Images of War creates an apocalyptic vision of war, which depicts Russia and its allies as a force for good against the satanic evil of the Central Powers which threaten them. This print in the series shows a group of the Imperial Russian Cavalry witnessing a vision of the Madonna and Child, the infant Christ raising his hand in blessing over the Russian soldiers. Goncharova used a combination of motifs from Russian folklore and culture combined with images of the present day. The Madonna in this print is strongly influenced by Russian Orthodox iconography.
