'Peresvet and Oslyabya' from the portfolio 'Images of War'
About this artwork
Natalia Gonchorova played a vital role in the development of contemporary book illustration in Russia, with her first published work used as the cover for the 1910 Knave of Diamonds exhibition catalogue. This lithograph, part of the Images of War portfolio depicts the Russian heroes Alexander Peresvet and Rodion Oslyabya. These two monks became famous for their part in the Battle of Kulikovo, where Peresvet fought in single combat against the opposing champion. As near mythical heroes of Russia they were a strong patriotic motif for Goncharova to reference.
