About this artwork

This work by German artist Kitty Kraus explores the border between sculpture and drawing. A simple lightbulb and its fittings are frozen in a block of black ink. When the lamp is turned on, it melts the ice, leaving an inky stain that randomly extends into the gallery space. Both the melting process and the stain are part of the artwork. In much of her work Kraus uses simple materials and relinquishes control so that chance can take over.
