About this artwork
Sophie Brzeska was primarily a writer, although she was never published during her lifetime. She had no training in art or drawing, but she lived an artistic and bohemian life, and was the partner and frequent life model of artist Henri Gaudier-Brzeska (1891–1915). We have very little information about these two drawings. The effervescent landscapes demonstrate that drawing is never limited to those with a formal art education. Rather, it can be embraced by anyone seeking a creative outlet. She lived in Paris then London but spent her later years in rural Gloucestershire. Brzeska enjoyed sketching in the countryside, and it is likely that these two watercolours were made outdoors during this time in her life.
