About this artwork
Sophie Brzeska was primarily a writer, although she was never published during her lifetime. She had no training in art or drawing, but she lived an artistic and bohemian life, and was the partner and frequent life model of artist Henri Gaudier-Brzeska(1891–1915).We have very little information about this effervescent landscape. It demonstrates that drawing is never limited to those with a formal art education. Rather, it can be embraced by anyone seeking a creative outlet. Brzeska lived in the market town of Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire, from 1917 to 1922. She enjoyed sketching in the countryside, and it is likely that this undated watercolour, and a related work, were made outdoors during this time in her life.
