About this artwork
This drawing is one of a series which captures the close relationships between a group of women artists in Glasgow at the turn of the 20th century. At the time, widespread assumptions that an artist was a male ‘genius’ working alone remained prevalent. This artwork is perhaps Helen Paxton Brown’s retort to this misconception. She cleverly subverts the stereotypes, presenting us with a fashionable woman in a dynamic pose, clutching her portfolio of drawings – in full command of her creative and professional life.
