About this artwork
This photograph forms part of an archive which belonged to Isabella T. McNair. Born in Kilmarnock, McNair gained an MA in English from the University of Edinburgh before moving to British India in 1917 to teach. In 1928 she was appointed Principal of Kinnaird College for Women in Lahore. Noted for her commitment to women’s education she placed a high value on academic skills advocating Western ideas of female intellectual equality in the Punjab University community. She convinced the University officials to provide science lessons at the College which had previously been neglected as part of women’s education. This snapshot was sent to McNair during her retirement and shows the new McNair Building for Science constructed in the 1950s.
