Equality

The General Equality Duty set out in the Equality Act 2010 states that public sector bodies like National Galleries of Scotland (NGS) must have due regard to the need to:

  • Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation and other conduct that is prohibited by the Equality Act 2010
  • Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a relevant protected characteristic and those who do not
  • Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not

The characteristics protected in the legislation are: age, disability, gender reassignment, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation.  The duty also covers marriage and civil partnerships, with regard to eliminating unlawful discrimination in employment.

NGS is committed to ensuring the needs of the General Equality Duty are taken into account in the delivery of our functions as a service provider and employer.

As required in the Equality Act 2010 (Specific Duties)(Scotland) Regulations 2012, we have prepared a set of equality outcomes which we plan to work towards over the period 2021-25. These are:

  • An increasing number of people with under-represented protected characteristics apply for paid and volunteer roles at NGS
  • Artists and sitters with under-represented protected characteristics are increasingly included in our acquisitions and public programme

We are also required to prepare a set of reports to comply with the legislation mentioned above.  These are available below and can be provided in alternative formats, such as large print or hard copy, by emailing [email protected] or calling 0131 624 6473. Please note that the Equality Outcomes and Mainstreaming Progress Report for 2023 will be published soon.
