This photograph forms part of an archive which belonged to Isabella T. McNair. Born in Kilmarnock, McNair gained an MA in English from the University of Edinburgh before moving to British India in 1917 to teach. She became Principal of Kinnaird College for Women in Lahore in1928. McNair followed in the footsteps of a wave of British missionary women who began arriving in India during the late nineteenth century. Kinnaird regularly staged drama performances in its open air theatre which launched the careers of many famous actresses from both India and Pakistan. It is very likely that this is a photograph from one such performance. According to her students McNair refused to allow a performance of Ibsen’s ‘A Doll’s House’, maintaining that she could not present a woman who abandoned her children as a role model.
