This photograph forms part of an archive which belonged to Isabella T. McNair. Born in Kilmarnock, McNair gained an MA in English from the University of Edinburgh before moving to British India in 1917 to teach. She became Principal of Kinnaird College for Women in Lahore in 1928. McNair followed in the footsteps of a wave of British missionary women who began arriving in India during the late nineteenth century. This photograph was probably taken at Women's Christian College in Madras where McNair was a teacher from 1917 to 1928. It shows a female teacher instructing her young students in astronomy. However, the photograph looks staged especially considering the group appear to be stargazing in daylight.
