Throughout his career Sander photographed individuals and groups of people in his native Germany, classifying them according to their occupations and positions in society. This ambitious attempt to document the German people resulted in the monumental project People of the 20th Century. He organised over 500 photographs into seven groups: ‘The Farmer’, ‘The Skilled Tradesman’, ‘The Woman’, ‘Classes and Professions’, ‘The Artists’, ‘The City’ and ‘The Last People’. This portrait is from the portfolio entitled ‘Types and Figures of the City’ within the sixth group, ‘The City’. Pictured here, Raoul Hausmann (1886–1971) was a member of the Berlin Dada group in the years after World War I, writing many key texts and editing the journal ‘Der Dada’. He also co-organised many Dada events, such as the ‘First International Dada Fair’ in 1920. In his Dada activities, Hausmann purposely blurred the boundaries between the arts, including photography and dance. Here Sander has recorded him exploring physical expression.

A radical artistic and literary movement that was a reaction against the cultural climate that supported the First World War. The Dadaists took an anti-establishment attitude, questioning art's status and favouring performance and collage over traditional art techniques. Many Dadaists went on to become involved with Surrealism.
