A Syrian Shepherd About 1865

Not on display

The nineteenth-century westerner looking at this photograph would have been reminded of the origins of Christianity. This Syrian shepherd could easily be one of Jesus' disciples. Wealthy westerners must have felt challenged by his steady gaze and simple dress, referring to the simplicity and poverty of early Christianity. The West's enslavement to fashion sits rather uneasily beside this image of permanence.
