This painting is a late work by Winifred McKenzie. She continued to paint until the age of ninety, when her career was ended by failing eyesight. The artist’s travels in the Mediterranean, France and Switzerland from the 1960s to the 1990s inspired many of her later paintings, with still lifes and landscapes central to her oeuvre. The style of this work, with the space between tree branches painted as solid blocks, recalls Cubist painting and the work of Cézanne. McKenzie stated that she was primarily influenced by nature and the effects of light - in this work, light floods through the trees and is rendered in soft colours.
