The Highlands are known around the world as a place of wild and spectacular scenery with a turbulent, epic past. The great droves of highlanders who emigrated during the clearances retained many of the customs and cultures of their homeland, which accounts for the fondness in which the region is held by thousands of Scots descendents today. Tourism thrives in the great mountains and glens as visitors flock to the scenes of great and sorrowful events from Scottish History: the Massacre at Glencoe (1692), the Battle of Culloden (1745), and the roving adventures of Bonnie Prince Charlie and Rob Roy.
