The Belgian artist and filmmaker Johan Grimonprez came to prominence when this highly-acclaimed film-essay, ‘dial H-I-S-T-O-R-Y’, was shown in 1997 at Documenta X. The work traces the history of airplane hijackings through archival images discovered during thorough archival research, televised images and quirky home movies. An exploration into media's mutating collusion with mass perception, and set against passages from Don DeLillo’s novels ‘Mao II’ and ‘White Noise’, this dizzying chronicle of airplane hijacking eerily foreshadowed the events of 9/11.
