You Know the Old Story 1975

In the mid 1970s Ruscha began exploring ways to use phrases in paintings, drawings and prints set against a variety of unconventional, textured backdrops such as this one. Many of the statements he has used come from clichéd, American slang and seem familiar without giving away an obvious meaning. He has said, ‘There’s no right or wrong way to approach my work, each viewer will have his or her own associations anyway. And that’s the way it should be.’
