As the director of the Arts and Crafts Museum in Cologne and a member of the German Association of Craftsmen, Karl With was deeply committed to the reform of the arts and crafts. In this photograph, included in the portfolio entitled ‘The Scholar’ within the group ‘Classes and Professions’ in August Sander’s photographic project ‘People of the 20th Century,’ Sander posed With in front of a desk on which a ceramic container known as an amphora stands (just visible on the left side of the image) alluding to the classical crafts of ancient Greece and Rome. With leans casually on his desk, in a pose that suggests vitality and an imminent interaction with the photographer and, by extension, with the viewer.
