This portrait is included in the portfolio entitled ‘The Businessman’ from the group ‘Classes and Professions’ in August Sander’s ambitious project ‘People of the 20th Century’. Comprising of more than 500 photographs divided into seven groups and over 45 portfolios, the project was intended to present an accurate typology of the German people. Here the grocer stands behind a marble counter before a gridded background of wooden drawers and shelves containing stacked oblong paper packets. Although Sander has omitted the subject’s name and location as was his frequent practice, the paper bag set on the scales bears his name and address: ‘Johannes Odenthal in Cologne’. His head slightly tilted to the right, the grocer gazes inquiringly towards the photographer.
