This standing double portrait sees the two painters pose in front of a pale wall, with Räderscheidt standing slightly behind Hegemann and holding her shoulder proprietorially with his right hand. She clasps her hands at waist level, and looks straight ahead. Both wear formal overcoats, closely buttoned, revealing nothing of their professions. Neither looks at the camera, gazing instead slightly to the right of the photographer. This portrait is from the portfolio entitled ‘The Woman and the Man’, classified in the group ‘The Woman’ in August Sander’s ‘People of the 20th Century’. A further photograph of Marta, declaring her occupation overtly both in its title and in the image, is included in the portfolio ‘The Woman in Intellectual and Practical Occupation' and titled 'Painter (Marta Hegemann)’ (about 1925).
