For over fifty years Sander photographed individuals and groups of people in his native Germany, classifying them according to their occupations and positions in society. This lifelong attempt to document the German people resulted in the ambitious project entitled `People of the 20th Century’. This photograph is from Group One, Portfolio Seven, `Sport’. It shows two boxers standing side-by-side. Together they look like an unusual pair. The figure on the left, tall and composed, stands with his feet perfectly turned out and arms firmly by his sides. The figure on the right, however, wears a huge grin on his face and stands in a more relaxed pose. It is easy to guess who would win in a fight.
