Role-playing was a central aspect of many of Warhol’s self-portraits. In 1981 the artist was videoed and photographed wearing various wigs and make-up. The video was produced for ‘Andy Warhol’s TV on Saturday Night Live’. Christopher Makos, a member of Warhol’s close circle of friends, described the process as a “Dadaist experiment…The point was not drag itself but the altered image. It had nothing to do with trans-sexuality. As you can see: no stuffed bras, no artificial fingernails. Only the face is altered”.
