Extensive Landscape 1666
Koninck often adopted a high viewpoint for his panoramas of the Dutch countryside, as he did here. His observations from nature, which inspired the detail in his paintings, gave credibility to such largely imaginary scenes, and recall the character of his native Gelderland. The undulating slopes with shadows of the clouds above, clumps of trees and stretches of water lead the eye across the land to the distant horizon. Koninck’s paintings were highly regarded by contemporaries and commanded high prices.
