Talks & Lectures | Lessons of the Hour | Isaac Julien in conversation with Celeste-Marie Bernier

In partnership with Edinburgh Art Festival and British Council, National Galleries of Scotland are delighted to present internationally acclaimed artist Professor Isaac Julien CBE RA in conversation with Professor Celeste-Marie Bernier, Chair of United States and Atlantic Studies, University of Edinburgh.

This talk was originally broadcast live, the Keynote event of the 2021 Edinburgh Art Festival opening weekend. The first part of the conversation was specially recorded in Edinburgh’s Assembly Rooms and is followed by responses to audience questions.

Isaac Julien’s ten-screen film installation Lessons of the Hour was on display at Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art (Modern One) from 1 September - Sunday 10 October 2021. It is a poetic portrait of anti-slavery activist Frederick Douglass (1818-1895), the visionary orator, philosopher, intellectual and self-liberated freedom fighter, who was born into slavery in Maryland, USA. Douglass was a frequent visitor to Edinburgh in the 1840s, campaigning against slavery and for freedom and equal rights. Bernier is one of the leading scholars on Douglass.
