National Galleries of Scotland Art Competition for Schools and Families

Welcome to the National Galleries of Scotland Art Competition for Schools and Families 2020.

Although our galleries are currently closed the competition is still open! Due to the Covid-19 situation we are unable to set a closing date but expect it to be in the autumn. Please check our website and social media for updates. Please keep hold of your entries until further notice.

In recognition of the amazing job everyone is doing by supporting their kids with activities at home, we're delighted to announce that for this year's competition we'll accept entries submitted by families as well as schools and nurseries.

This year there are lots of fantastic ways to win!

  • 53 prizes of art materials for winners with their work exhibited at the National Galleries of Scotland
  • There are additional special prizes from our partners: Scottish Ballet and the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh
  • All winning artworks will be exhibited at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and will feature in a colourful calendar posted to every school in Scotland.

We hope you enjoy looking at, talking about and making your own art.

Competition terms and conditions

Voucher applications for schools

To support art in schools, teachers are invited to apply for a free artist led workshop for their class or £100 vouchers for art materials. Just complete the application form and submit it with your entries.  12 vouchers and 12 workshops will be allocated.

Family entries

In recognition of the amazing job everyone is doing by supporting their kids with activities at home, we're delighted to announce that for this year's competition we'll accept entries submitted by families as well as schools and nurseries.

Children can work on their own entries at home and submit them once the galleries are open again. We will update you on how to do this once we are open. Children should submit to the category that matches their age group.

For collaborative families we have also opened up the group entry to families.

If you are looking for more art activities check out our weekly-changing programme of creative activities that can be carried out both at home and in schools during the school closure.

Scottish Ballet and the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh

This year we are working with Scottish Ballet and the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. As well as helping select the winning artworks, Scottish Ballet will choose some further pieces in celebration of their 2020 Christmas production and the Garden will also select additional artworks in celebration of their 350th anniversary. Both will have special prizes their winners.
