Princess Elizabeth, Electress Palatine and Queen of Bohemia

Crispijn de Passe the Elder (about 1565–1637)

About 1613–19, engraving

Elizabeth was named after her godmother, Queen Elizabeth I. Like her brothers, she was not raised by her parents, but by Lord and Lady Livingstone at Linlithgow Palace. An affectionate relationship developed between her and her brother Henry when they travelled to England in 1603. As the only surviving daughter of James and Anna, she would not inherit the throne, but she was a highly desirable bride to the princes of Europe. In 1613 she married Frederick V, Elector Palatine, and they later became King and Queen of Bohemia.
