Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales, as Duke of Rothesay and Cornwall

Robert Peake the Elder (about 1551–1619)

1604, oil on canvas

This portrait leaves no doubt about the sitter’s new importance. As the monarch’s eldest son, Prince Henry Frederick automatically assumed the title of Duke of Cornwall following his father’s accession to the English and Irish thrones. In this portrait Henry wears the robes and collar of the Order of the Garter – the English chivalric order. The elaborate jewel in the prince’s hat features a gem-set ship and alludes to his interest in military and naval affairs.
