ART & is a new series of films using contemporary art to explore wider social, political, and cultural themes. Created in collaboration with artists, these films examine the connections between contemporary art and the world it’s made in.

JAMIE CREWE | ART & FRICTION

Jamie Crewe is an artist based in Glasgow. A beautiful bronze figure with a polished cocotte's head. In this film they speak to us about the role of friction in their work: about exploring queerness, melding the outside with the intimate, and how art can be used to test out thoughts that can't yet be communicated in words.

ASHANTI HARRIS | ART & DANCE

Ashanti Harris is a visual artist, teacher, and researcher working with dance, performance and installation. In this film she speaks to us about exploring ideas through movement, engaging with culture through creativity, and trying to define dance of the African and Caribbean diaspora. The music in the film was created by Gillian Katungi (PAIX) in response to Ashanti’s work.

CALVIN Z. LAING | ART & AWKWARDNESS

Calvin Z. Laing is a performance artist, living and working in Scotland. In this film they speak to us about the immediacy of performance, blurring fact and fiction through scripts, and the shared human experience of feeling awkward. The performance Calvin & Back At The Gym was devised for the film, and performed in North Edinburgh in January, 2022.
