Zwelethu Mthethwa (born 1960) is a South African photographer who was educated at the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town. After receiving a Fulbright Scholarship, he completed an MFA in Imaging Art from the Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, New York. His large colour photographs typically depict the people and cultures of post-apartheid South Africa and explore issues of identity and belonging. In 2017 Mthethwa was convicted of murder and is currently serving a jail sentence for killing Nokuphila Kumalo.
