Biography

Jones’ work shows a definitive and pure fascination with the material qualities of paint. He creates impenetrable, staunchly physical, monochromatic paintings; the paint is so thick it adopts a three-dimensional, sculptural quality. In using a variety of tools to scrape, comb and score the surface, Jones allows the paint to ooze off the edge of the canvas. This results in a distinctly tangible surface which blurs the traditional divisions between sculpture and painting. Jones studied at Camberwell College of Art from 1988-9 and Norwich School of Art from 1989-92 before gaining an M.A. from Chelsea College of Art and Design in 1993.
