Wenceslaus Hollar was born in Prague, then capital of the historical region Bohemia (present day Czech Republic). After working in various towns in Germany he moved to London, where he was to spend most of his career and stayed until his death. He is best known for his topographical landscape views and maps, but the subjects of his etchings were wide ranging and included studies of women's costume, portraits and historic subjects.
