Stella Malcolm was born in Glenmorag, Argyll, and was an accomplished photographer and chess player. Malcolm focused on landscapes and urban scenes in her photographic work, depicting scenery and daily life in Scotland and abroad. She was the vice-president of the Edinburgh Photographic Society and exhibited in both America and Europe. Alongside her photography career, Malcolm was a pioneer of chess in Edinburgh. In 1928 she won Scottish Ladies’ Chess Championship and she went on to found the Edinburgh Ladies’ Chess Club.
