Michael Armitage lives and works between London and Nairobi. He received his Undergraduate Degree in Fine Art from the Slade School of Fine Art, London (2003-2007) and has a Postgraduate Diploma from the Royal Academy Schools, London (2007-2010). His paintings weave together stories drawn from a range of sources, including past and current news media, internet gossip and recollections of his time spent living in Kenya.
Using a rich colour palette, his works depict urban and rural landscapes, lush vegetation and animal life, as well as providing a visual account of the sometimes harsh realities of Kenyan politics, social inequalities and violence and extreme disparities in wealth.
