Biography

Born 1956
Nationality English

Douglas-Menzies was born in London and began her photography career as an assistant to Jeremy Whitaker, an architectural photographer, and Sidney Harris, a press and PR photographer. She then worked for Sotheby’s auction house as an in-house photographer before embarking on a freelance career in 1986. She has since worked in the world of fine art photography and has developed her own work through portraiture. Douglas-Menzies’s favoured approach is to shoot her sitters on location, incorporating an aspect of their personal domain into the background. This contextual information encourages interplay between the subject and their environment, offering the viewer greater insight into the sitter.
