Allegedly named because of his birth by caesarean section, Julius Caesar Ibbetson attempted through his life to hide his middle name. He was initially apprenticed to a ship painter in Hull where he also worked as a theatre scene painter before moving to London in 1777. He was a self-taught artist, exhibiting landscape and genre scenes at the Royal Academy over a thirty year period, working across Britain.
