James Cadenhead specialised in portraiture and landscape painting. He was born in Aberdeen, where he received his initial artistic training under the patronage of Dr. John Forbes White. He then went on to study at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh and in Paris. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, and was elected a Scottish Royal Academician in 1921.
