Felix Jacques Moulin worked as a photographer in Paris between1851 and 1869. He was praised by contemporaries for his technical abilities and artistic flare, especially his genre photographs - scenes of everyday life that he 'staged' in his studio. Moulin arrived in Algeria in March 1856 with a letter of introduction from the French Minister of War, an assistant and tons of luggage. When he returned to France eighteen months later, he was carrying several hundred negatives depicting the Algerian people and their environment as well as the lifestyle of the French colonists.
