Barbara Rae was born in Falkirk, Scotland and is best known as a painter and printmaker. Rae attended Edinburgh College of Art and trained as a teacher at Moray House College of Education. She has taught at both Aberdeen College of Education and Glasgow School of Art. Best known for her landscapes, Rae uses bright, vivid colours in her abstract compositions. Rae is a member of the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Academy and has been awarded a CBE.
