About this artwork

This photograph shows the children of the artists, Edward Arthur Walton and Helen Walton. The appearance of the picture suggests that it was taken with a small snapshot camera and enlarged. The two boys and the older girl may well have been posed around the upheld jar with the tadpole, but the younger girl has clearly just lost control of the dog, which is walking off out of the frame. Children playing in the country in the summer, was a popular theme in late nineteenth to early twentieth century painting.
