Tender VIII
About this artwork
Tender was commissioned by the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in 1999 for an exhibition about public healthcare in Scotland. The photographer Iain Stewart shadowed GPs Dr Ninian Hewitt and Dr Susan Moir over a period of six months during home visits and consultations in their Edinburgh practice. Tender VIII is one of twelve prints selected for the final series. The photographs document the exceptional, intimate bond of trust between a doctor and patient. As Iain observes: ‘In another situation, you never see people let down their guard and let themselves be touched.’
