About this artwork

This intriguing photograph shows the Scottish national rugby team from 1876-77. In comparison to contemporary photographs of the national team, this image has been taken indoors – perhaps due to the photographer’s desire to control the lighting, an intrinsic factor in early photography. The men are wearing caps, which mark their appearance during an international match (a term that is continued to this day). However, their clothing is remarkably different to the carefully designed, performance driven strip that rugby players sport nowadays.
