Lee Miller

Henry Moore, London 1943

About this artwork

Henry Moore was an official war artist during the Second World War. This scene at Holburn station, which was captured by Miller two years after the Blitz had ended, is a staged reconstruction of Moore sketching in the London Underground during German air raids. It was made for the documentary, ‘Out of Chaos’, directed and scripted by Jill Cragie, about official war artists.  Moore made a series of drawings from his memory of an air raid shelter he was part of in August 1940 at Belsize Park station.
