Harry Benson

Contact Sheet of Robert Kennedy Assassination, Los Angeles

About this artwork

This work is unusual in that it comprises several of the images Benson took before, and in the aftermath of, the assassination of Senator Robert F. Kennedy in Los Angeles, 1968. It features the iconic image of Ethel Kennedy, which was published hours after the assassination, alongside perfectly composed shots of the scene before the incident and out-of-focus snaps taken during the height of the chaos. As a whole the photographs highlight the role of the photojournalist in documenting such a tragedy. Just after securing these images Benson was knocked to the floor by a Kennedy aide. Instinctively he changed films and hid the valuable spool, which featured these iconic pictures, down his sock.
