Retired man and his wife at home in a nudist camp one morning, N.J. 1963
About this artwork
This picture could be anyone’s snapshot of their parents, pictured relaxed at home by the television in their favourite armchairs, wearing their comfortable slippers. Everything about the scene in this photograph is familiar except that they are naked. This collision of the normal and the unusual is typical of much of Arbus’s work as is her masterful use of the daylight that streams through the window and the open door. The pictures on the television set include not holiday snaps, but a portrait of a nudist friend and, where you might expect a traditional watercolour on the wall, is a slightly naughty pin-up girl.
